The village of Ventabren is home to the largest stone aqueduct in the world, registered in the World Heritage monuments.
Its impressive height of 83 meters and 375 meters length (compared to the 47 by 266 meters of the Pont du Gard), allows the structure to channel water from the Durance river to Marseille.
It was built between 1842 and 1847 by a 26 year old engineer, Franz Mayor de Montricher. It was conceived to supply water to the city of Marseille in order to withstand frequent droughts.Today, this incredible structure with three rows of arches is still active.
